How can I fix my norton antivirus 2002???

My Norton antirus program recently stopped scanning incoming and outgoing mail. I am getting a message when my computer starts up...''CANT START NORTON EMAIL PROTECTION''. Also there is a an URGENT MESSAGE SAYING ERROR on email scanning when I open the antivirus by clicking the icon. If I have to uninstall and reinstall will I lose all of my latest virus definitons . My subscription expired and dont want to pay them again for definitons.

2)most work pc's have more protection the home pc's.

3)Unless he is EXTREMELY(i stress extremely) good hacker there isnt a way for him to access your pc UNLESS you downloaded something from him b/c then he could send you a trojan virus which is like opening a back door to your pc and they can do whatever they want with it.

4)its unlikey that he got your ip unless again you d/l'ed something from him (i.e. a p2p network)

5)your pc has a ip and so does your firewall so it IS possible to have one and not the other.

so unless again he is EXTREMELY good (like its all he does all day) i wouldnt worry. he is probably just trying to scare you but to be on the safe side, if you see your pc acting funny-shut your connection off quick and run an anti-virus.

am having trouble booting up my PC (Windows98). When i boot the machine up i get screen prompting me to start in safe mode.

VXD files normally have to do with video drivers in some form or another. Evidently one of those files became corupt.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for booting it up, except using a boot disk and hoping it has the drivers on it or simply reload Windows from scratch.

It is fairly good. Just make sure you follow the instruction it gives you from time to time as far as applying updates and running scans. It'll change color to indicate the status of your computer (green, yellow, red) to indicate what is going on. So if you ignore it when it is telling you there might be problems then it is of no use. Like any program it won't do anything for you if you don't make sure to use it.

I downloaded DIVX video player a few weeks ago, and I got a warning as It was downloading saying that ''A Trojan had been detected''. I know a Trojan is a type of virus, as my sister had one on her computer once. So I used my virus protection software to clean all files on my PC, deleted the DIVX player, and I have not had a problem since.

So, this morning, I wanted to watch a film, but I needed the DIVX player to watch it. I thought I may as wll try again (Seeing as DIVX is quite a well known brand, I thought that there product surely can't be that bad?) However, I've had problems again! My computer totally froze up and didn't respond when I tried to shut it down. I eventually had to kill the power at the wall-switch.

Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools at the top, click Internet Options.

In the window that comes up click on the Advanced tab at the top, and check BOTH of the boxes that say ''Disable Script Debugging'', and also check the box that says ''Display a Notification about every script error''.

Now click OK, and close Internet Explorer and reopen it. Try the site you got the error on and it should not give an error.

I am in ''Add/Remove Programs'' in the Control Panel and I saw ''Yahoo Anti-Spy'' listed there taking up 39.0 MB of space. Is this thing somehow tied in with Norton? Because I just got rid of Norton on my computer and got CA Virus protection and like it much better. My question is can I just delete it from ''Add/Remove Programs''. The weird thing is that it says that it is only used occasionally and that the last time it was used was on 1/3/07 which is today? Don't understand that. I have Adware installed and that's the one I use all the time. If I uninstall this Yahoo Anti-Spy - will it delete my regular Yahoo Toolbar also? My Frostwire pgm doesn't work after downloading the the version of Microsoft/Yahoo enhancement

Microsoft/Yahoo offered a new version of the internet explorer (verson 7) which I downloaded. Then when I went to use my FrostWire pgm I found a firewall blocking my connection. I spent a week trying to get around that firewall and have given up hope. When I was finally able to get the firewall down I had NO protection of any of my systems. And the computer was slower then a snail. I have a lifetime subscription to FrostWire and would like to use it. But it still is unaccessible at this point. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I just recntly got a virus of sorts that when I restart my computer there is a red/white symbol in the back with like 3 taurus symbols(the zodiac sign) and a circle going through them. I can exit this out as it is just a full popup that goes behind my desktop shortcuts and has a minimize/maximize/exit/restore bar. My computer has downloaded 3 spyware protection programs automatically onto my computer onme including something called error cleaner i think. If anyone knows how to get this off of my computer or even knows what it is please answer. keep in mind that my system recovery thing won't work and I don't have a disk right now to re format my computer. Also, Norton does not find anything abnormal.

download adaware (you can google it) for free. This is a trusted program I assure you. Before doing that uninstall all of the other programs you talked about if you can. Do not restart the computer after the uninstall. Run the Adaware program and this should help. And in the future do not click ads that want to check your computer for free. Also I would dump Nortons and get Avast. You can google this also. it is a virus check/removal program, free and trusted. You can uninstall programs in your control panel (start-settings-control panel-add/remove programs).

not nessicarily, anit virus's merely reduce the possiblities of getting virus's, but it doesn't meen it will prevent anything from happening for sure. but even if a virus did get to your computer, you can use those anti virus programs to repair it, and if that doesn't work, try the system repair option in the control panel under performance and maintainance, it'll bring your computer back to its previous health and statis.

so with all that, i wouldn't worry about it, because accidents could be fixed.

If she has a good antivirus program it will probably take care of the problem, since it did notify her of it. Since you didn't say the name of the antivirus that she is using, we'll just assume it is adequate for now.

You also didn't say anything about any pop ups trying to get her to download anything, so let's assume it's not a trojan infection for now.

If her antivirus asks her what to do with the infected files, tell her the first thing she wants to do is have it ''heal'' them. If it says they can't be healed, tell her to have it put them in the virus vault, or chest, or whatever her antivirus calls its quarantine.

If her antivirus doesn't fix the problem at all, have her exit all running programs then run the following online virus scans, which fix what they find for free:

Help with unknown virus?

I'll try to be very specific about my problem. I keep getting a popup about every 3 minutes from Computer Associates Yahoo Online Anti-Virus Protection saying that I am getting infected, deleted, infected, deleted, etc with Win32/Alureon!generic and Win32/Bloon.V. Everytime it comes up it changes the name of it's exe file. I run Yahoo Anti-Spy and it says that I have CWS.Fead and it can not be deleted. I have been to Symantec, McAfee, Microsoft, Trendmicro, AdwareAway, Avast, and CWSShredder and none of them recognize these viruses. Can anyone help with detailed intructions on how to get rid of these nasty bugs? Thanks in advance...

Your best bet its to grab an anti-virus, such as Zone Alarm Anti-virus.. I had the same virus and it affected 6 files, and had 5 different names.. seems to be alot of viruses going around with win32. Run your computer in safe mode if you can and then run a virus scan.
Try free antivirus as avg and trysolo cause maybe it's work. Cause I have problem before that my computer is infected virus that are close off all the program related to antivirus then i use trysolo and avg to solve it

I've gone through several real recommended programs, and they all say I have a bunch of parasites. I want to get rid of all these, such as Spy Shredder, Online Guard, Dr. Protection, and all that other junk, but everytime I go through those recomended programs, I always have to pay for something. Is there some way I can remove all of this stuff without paying for the removal? I think the floppies you are using is write protected. There will be a notch at the bnottom of the floppy, just pull it. Everything will work fine.
There is a button in the floppy driv strcture that is pressed when you select the knotch on the floppy disk to Lock. Check if it is not stuck pressed. Thats the most probable reason i think. contact a hardware vendor or maintainer. or do it by urself if you are confident in opening the drive body.

I agree with the other poster it sounds like a memory leak. If you recently upgraded to IE 7 this is a good possibility the program has many flaws! I would start by turning my computer off and turning it back on, this will reset and refresh the memory.
Did you install IE7? Plz. put in comments. Otherwise, try rebooting your modem and put WEP protection or put MAC address validation to rule out people stealing your bandwidth.

Whenever I turn on my Sony Vaio laptop message windows start popping up saying that Windows IE (Internet Explorer) has detected adware, spyware and it's infecting my computer and to click OK to clean my computer. I have had my windows Vista computer since X-mas. In the past few days, my CPU usuage has not dropped below 60% and is quite often higher. In task manager, the program using CPU is listed as ''system'' and described as NT Kernel %26 System.

I run McAfee virus/internet protection and it has detected no faults. When the computer is started in ''safe mode'' the CPU usuage is back to its normal values. In my search for a solution, I have seen this question asked several times with no usable solution. I want to make clear that my processor and RAM are adequate for VISTA, and reaffirm that the problem has started in the past few days.

DO NOT REFORMAT your PC. It is likely something very minor. First off, did your PC automatically install service pack 1 for Vista recently? There may be an imcompatibility. Most PC's run better on SP1, but some do not. If it is definitely not SP1, then I would do 2 things.

1. Run System Restore. Just click the start button and type ''system restore'' into the box. Pick a date a couple of days before this problem happened. That should fix it.

2. If service pack 1 (SP1) is NOT the problem, then definitely install it. Go to Microsoft Downloads and get the 5-language full installer.

If the malware locked the control panel you may have other issues with the install. You might first try using an online scanner such as OneCare. You can get a list of some others in the second link.

My dad is taking my laptop into work for a protection update done by his friend who works with computers - tomorrow morning. I have nothing to hide, however I don't like the idea of someone having complete access to my favorites. My brother put some protection on our internet a while ago to discourage freeloaders, and apparently his family since he won't help hook up my computer. Through guess work looking at the our hooked up computer's connection, I was able to make my laptop find our wireless. The search window shows it as found. It's described as ''Not connected'' with 4/5 bars and also ''You are currently connected to this network. To disconnect from this network, click Disconnect.'' Double clicking it = disconnect too.

Under the control panel, it says 'not connected, firewalled.' I just refreshed the computer (recovery-system) so how can it be firewalled? Where should I go in my computer to fix it?

I know I have a virus, but it's not being detected by my antivirus software?

A few days ago I my anti-virus software (McAfee) detected and cleaned a Trojan on my computer. I scanned all my files and it found 3 more infected files, which we causing me to have numerous popups on my computer. I've scanned my computer probably 10 times in the best 3-4 days and although it says the system is clean I'm still getting popups and my computer's acting weird. My McAfee will not open, and when it finally does, it won't enable virus protection or allow my system to be scanned. When I open my computer's history, I see links that claim to be internet pages that appear with the title 'NDrBC' and usually comes with a number (1-9) following the 'C'. For example, one file is NDrBC3.tmp. It says this file is stored on my local disc in my Local Settings under 'Temp'. I am pretty sure this is a virus, can anyone confirm this for me? Should I try to manually delete these files, or should I buy complete new antivirus software, and what do you suggest? Price is not an issue. Thanks!

Delete your temporary (.tmp) files. Notice these are completely different from the Temporary INTERNET Files that kids like to delete to prevent mommy and daddy from seeing where they have browsed! Navigate to the folder and delete if you can. Temp files are where downloaded programs install from.

yeah. didn't they learn from their experience with beta? there are only 2 likely options when trying to force your own proprietary media on the masses: 1) total industry domination and 2) total failure. i don't really think there are enough people out there that are in love with sony enough to make this work well for them. i prophesize that blu-ray will be extinct in a few years, leaving lots of unhappy people stuck with blu-ray disc players that won't see any more new movies, just like with beta in the 80's.

I'm thinking about getting a Mac computer, because I heard they don't crash.

I have a HP computer right now. With even with my virus protection I have on my Hp, and every so often when my child gets codes for games or myspace we get some type of virus.

That depends on whether you stick to the Mac OS, or decide to use Apple's Boot Camp to run Windows in dual boot mode with the Mac. When dual booting, if you boot into Windows, you render the system susceptible to the same problems a PC can run into.

The solution I prefer for this is to run Windows in a program Window on the Mac, using a virtualization program. For the Mac, there are two - Parallels Desktop, and VMWare Fusion. Using one of these, if you get a virus in a virtual machine, you simply delete that virtual machine and create another one.

you need your own computer. if you have this already, then setup password protect on your account. then lock your computer when you're not using it. your messenger conversations are saved on your computer, you can delete the history of the conversation, not through internet options though.

I have the Rogers! Yahoo online protection software on 2 computers and a laptop. I finally got the 2 computers reinstalled and activated, however the laptop will not activate the Antivirus software. It activated the firewall. I uninstalled according to Rogers instructions, including appropriate software removal tools, and reinstalled. I got a little farther this time but still tries forever to activate the Norton Antivirus, then says RETRY or ACTIVATE LATER.

Okay. Recently I cannot login to anything online. I cant login to my Hotmail account, my Ebay account, or Xanga account. My Windows Media Player 11 also won't update and I can't login to any of my Istant Messaging things!!

If you have a firewall, it can block access. Temporarily disable it, and make sure any other spy sweepers or virus scans aren't blocking you- sometime their automatic updates will cause me problems.

Also delete temporary files that your computer has stored- they can build up and cause log-in issues.

Otherwise, call your internet provider helpline.
Make sure that cookies are enabled.

my friend just got a brand new gateway pc. not sure about memory and all that. it has a dvd burner installed. win xp.

unfortunatelyt for her dsl is not available where she lives so in the meantime she has yahoo dial:( (i know, i know)

mcafee protection was already installed. ad-aware se is also installed. she tried installing an msn dial disk she had on her previous pc. i think it is only partially installed though. when i first hooked her new computer up for her it had like 79 running processes in task manager. this was a week ago. now it has 60-62 constantly running. i know dial up sucks, but she had AOL came installed when she bought the pc. it was still slow then but now that she is on yahoo it seems to be slower. Given, hopefully, enough facts on this does anyone have any advice for her? I also need a recomendation for a good antivirus. i don't think mcafee is helping any. If gateways are anything like compaqs they have a ton of useless gateway ''apps'' loaded and running. I'd go to add/remove programs and physically remove anything with the word ''gateway'' in it. Be a good time to uninstall any toobars present too (except google of course). Also be a good idea to go into msconfig and remove anything unnecessary from loading at startup (necessary being the antivirus and firewall).

Lenovo X61 Tablet hardware problem -- URGENT!!!?

Hi. I have a problem with the locking mechanism on the X61 (both the slider on the keyboard (the spring) and the sliding hook on the display). I contacted IBM electronically (I used their ESC+ thing). Was that the right thing to do? I got it a couple of weeks ago and I got the 3 Year Depot Upgrade with 3 Year ThinkPad Protection. It's really confusing. Is there any way I can fix it myself?

Also, does anyone know if there is supposed to be something covering the two outlets for an UltraBase on the front side of the computer?

i have microsoft word 2007 and 2003, the problem is i cant type anything on either of them.i tried the protection documents by going on the tool panel but the text is not in black so i cant click on it. how can i type again? by the way my computer is a vista. does this affect it in anyway?

It sounds like a trial version that was good for 25 uses or 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on the deal your machine's manufacturer cut with Microsoft. At the end of that time, and apparently without warning, it will let you read your files, but not edit them or create new ones. You have to purchase Microsoft Office 2007, or at least Word 2007, to do that.

I just got my friend onto the internet but she appears to have a virus on her computer (it may be something else but if it is a virus it's a good one!) I decided that I'd better get her some virus protection, searched AVG and Internet Explorer closed, searched antivirus software and it closed again, tried searching virus, anti* etc. but eveytime it closed, finally managed to get on the site by searching AGV download but guess what???

Sooo, I went on to my computer and downloaded the file to load AVG on to her computer, transferred it with a chip reader and tried to open the file, absolutely nothing happens whichever way I try (run, open from explorer, add/remove programs)

What I really need to know, is it a virus? if so how do I get rid of it, I have only tried loading AVG so maybe it is specific to that program are there any other good free antivirus software (or even a trial version but one that removes viruss and doesn't just search for them)

Any help would be appreciated.

Do a complete scan of your computer with Panda. If there are any problems with browser hijackers (sorry about the technical stuff!) that should fix it.

there is a thing called a hosts file... its possible that it was edited somehow. off the top of my head... i wanna say its located in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc open it with notepad and clear everything in the list of stuff other than the localhost entry

IE 6.0 Win98 Internet Explorer Will Not Load All of Website鈥檚 images?

IE will not load images from one of my websites completely. This happens with only one website and only on one computer. When I use FireFox it loads the images completely. This happens with all of the pages from this website, usually not loading two of the images. I have disconnected my firewall and virus protection with no results. I have also cleared the cash. One of the reasons why you're internet explorer couldn't view images is that there might some corrupted files on IE because of Spywares/Viruses. Also, your IE settings might be misconfigured.

Try this steps:

1. Reconfigure the settings of IE.

Go to Tool - Internet Options, click on delete cookies and files then go to Settings and lower down the Amount of Disk Space to Use to 20 MB then ok.

Go to Advance and click on Restore Defaults, then apply and ok.

2. If that doesn't work, try to repair IE. Go to Add/Remove Programs, look for the icon for Internet Explorer then click Uninstall and then click on Repair.

3.If no go, try this:

Click the Start button.

Select Run.

When the the Run dialog box displays, type regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll in the Open field.

A few things you should do...

Open up Add/remove Programs from the control panel and uninstall any garbage that they installed.

Install Windows Defender from Microsoft. This will stop spyware/adware from installing in the future.

Recently I was downloading a movie from torrent (isohunt.com). I have been dowloading movies for at least a month or 2 and no problems. But in the middle of my download spiderman3, my internet goes down, not sure if cause.2Mac computers both in the same room. The APPLications Firefox and Safari weren't accessing the the internet.

It isn't a virus, keep scanning for the next couple months and you will see that your AV won't detect anything.

As for your internet connection, I would delete everything from System Preferences %26gt; Network and start a fresh configuration if the modem power cycling doesn't work. Don't forget to delete the Network items from Keychain.app if there are any.

Hi, I got my dads used laptop about 3 weeks ago. It has norton in the list of programs, but it is disabled and i cannot run it, as it was his and i don't know the passwords etc. So i didn't have any protection but man, it was so fast. I LOVED how fast it was. About a week ago i downloaded CA virus protection. This screwed up my computer. it was so slow (about 1-2 minutes to open a browser)...so after having enough of that i uninstalled it. well, now my computer is slower than ever! I was trying to type this quesion on my laptop and it keeps freezing up. I ran a internet security check thru symantec and it was fine. then when i try to run a virus check thru symantec it freezes at file 2806. So i can't even do anything on my lap top now. Save yourself the trouble and just re install the OS and get a clean start. Then u can install AVG anti virus and spy ware scanner. u should be fine after this.

There is nothing much you can do. Just keep your firewall enabled as this filters out much of the crap from internet and gives you some level of protection from hackers. Always keep your antivirus up todate. This happens automatically when you're online as the anti-virus software will prompt you that updates are available and if you want to download it. Make sure you always do this. Same for anti-spyware software. Scan your system every week. Not sure about Mcafee but with most antivirus software you can schedule a system scan whereby it will automatically do the full system scan for you. Always download windows updates as they turn to patch problems within your system. Never open Email attachment if they have double extensions e.g software.doc.exe, or end with the following extension : .exe,.dll,.pif,.bat,.zip,.rar,.ace.

Please ignore everyone so far. Currently, you have a wide range of security and optimization software on your computer. A security expert would tell you to have:

1 antivirus

3 antispyware

1 firewall

1 optimization tool

You have more than enough. Just remember to only have 1 antivirus as 2 or more may conflict BUT this is NOT true with antispyware. Most antispyware programs do not conflict with each other. Keep what you have and trust me its enough. Remember to update them every time you run a scan. This should be at least once a week.

Sorry if I wasnt clear. An optimization tool is one like CCleaner to clean out obsolete files and your registry. You stated you have CCleaner. Thererfore you have all of the things I listed and a little more so you are set. Remember to update them before scanning. Good luck! Report It

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing! You don't need more than one of each. You have the best antivirus protection in AVG, if you updated it today from the old free version. It should be version 7.5. If it isn't updated, do it now.

Then Ad-Aware and SpyBot are all you really need in the way of anti-spyware and malware remover, and that includes Windows Defender. I had all three, and found that the first two did a much better job of removal than Defender did. You don't need all the others.

Keep the firewall. Uninstall everything else. DON'T DELETE THEM, UNINSTALL THEM FROM ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS!
You should only run one spyware, one anti virus and one firewall program at a time as multiple programs can interfere with each other and could cause more damage.....
